Diagnosing Staph

        Isolation and identification :

1. Morphology (Gram + cocci in clusters) is very reminiscent of the microscopic examination.
2. To isolate Staph aureus samples plurimicrobiens, can be used a high concentration of NaCl.
3. Staphylococcus aureus can easily be grown on ordinary samples.
4. Simple enzymatic tests (oxidase - catalase +) can recognize the type and further tests define the species (presence of free coagulase or bound).
5. Serodiagnosis
6. The normal serum antistaphylolysines a is 0.5 to 2 units per milliliter, a rate higher than 2 U is thus significant. This determination is rarely requested.
7. Typing strains allows a diagnosis in epidemiological communities during an investigation conducted in response to food poisoning and the monitoring and control of nosocomial infections. You can type strains by serum agglutination or by phage typing and highlight the toxins but it is reserved for specific research reference laboratories.
